It’s One-Hit Wonder Wednesday! Each week, I’ll pick a one-hit wonder to stir nostalgia and make us all ask “what were people thinking?”
This week, it’s “The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia” by Vicki Lawrence.
Long before J-Lo became both a hit singer and an actress, Vicki Lawrence was on a hit TV show and had a hit record. In 1972, she was in her sixth year on “The Carol Burnett Show” and scored her first and only number one single with “The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia.”
The song was written by her then-husband Bobby Russell and was offered to Cher, who turned it down. With no one else available to record it, Lawrence recorded it herself.
In addition to hitting number one on the pop charts, it was also a top 40 hit on the country charts and a top 10 hit on the adult contemporary charts.
Check back next week for another “One-Hit Wonder Wednesday.”
